Study Finds Construction Drivers Need to Take Vehicle Safety More Seriously

More than a quarter (28%) of businesses have admitted they don’t invest in driver training and 17% do not carry out driver risk management and risk assessments. Therefore, many UK businesses are at risk of breaching health and safety legislation.

These statistics are the latest findings of a recent study by commercial vehicle rental company, Enterprise Flex-E-Rent, which surveyed 50 UK construction businesses of all sizes. Other statistics revealed that:

• 37% of those who do carry out driver risk assessments do so just once a year.
• 44% of those who offer driver training only do so after an incident has occurred and 28% only do so after a complaint has been made about one of their drivers.
• 50% of businesses said driver compliance is the biggest safety issue they manage.
• 83% said they intend on investing in vehicle safety technology in 2017, with the most common being reverse warning alarms, dash cams and driver telematics.
• 53% of the companies making this investment are doing so to reduce the number of accidents their drivers get into and 15% said it will help them win new business.
